Night of Falling Stars
(November 18-19, 2002)

Stars rising as the first peak of the Leonid
meteors comes and goes under brilliant moonlight.
Didn't see any during this peak, didn't catch any
with the camera either. Still, not a bad photo.
As the second peak approached, the weather improved and
deteriorated several times. Once, when the sky was almost
clouded over, I saw a brilliant meteor cause the southern
sky to flash like lightning. Encouraged, I kept the shutter
open even as fog formed and only Jupiter and Regulus shone in
the sky overhead. The Moon was very low in the west when this
bright Leonid (about as bright as Venus) came along:
The last Leonid I saw in 2002 was also the last one I photographed
as it flashed between the Big Dipper and the Pole:
